Sage Hurlburt was a leading general merchant in the Freedom Township area, postmaster, and also very much involved in public affairs of the township, having served as a trustee for twelve years. His political affiliation was Republican.
He married Jospehine Hawley Sage on March 9, 1876 after relocating her and her two daughters from Berrien Co., Michigan following the death of her husband Dwight Sage. They later had three sons of their own.
Following Josephine's death in 1904 from the black measels, he married Mrs. Emma Brown Potter on July 16, 1906.
Sage Hurlburt died on March 1, 1912 as his carriage collided with an oncoming train 3 miles east of Ravenna. His wife, who was with him in the carriage at the time, was seriously injured though eventually recovered.
