Service during the American Revolution listed as:
ASHMAN, JOHN. Private, Capt. Samuel Sloper's (12th) co., Col. David Mosley's (3d Hampshire Co.) regt.; enlisted June 12, 1782; discharged June 17, 1782; service, 6 days; marched to Northampton to support the government, June 12, 1782. [He served in the suppression of Ely's Rebellion.] Source: Ancestry.com

According to the town records of Salisbury, CT, John was born on Dec. 26, 1758, to Amasiah [Amaziah] and Ruth Ashman. The name Ashmun was often misspelled as Ashman. The family may have been living in adjacent Canaan at the time of his birth. Salisbury records seem to include some Canaan records as well.

John's father Amaziah was born in the 1720s and died between 1758 (the year John was born) and 1764 (the year Ruth had a child out of wedlock). Amaziah is probably buried in Canaan, CT. He and his brothers Justus (also buried in this cemetery) and Elnathan served in the French and Indian War. They were all sons of John Ashmun and Martha Porter of Farmington (Kensington section), CT.

John's mother Ruth (Burnham) Benjamin Ashmun White was married three times (see link below to her bio). Amaziah Ashmun was her second husband whom she wed between 1752 and 1754. They had two known children: Martha, baptized in East Hartford in 1754, and John born 1758 in Salisbury (or Canaan), CT. There may have been other children who did not survive.

John moved to Blandford, MA, in 1782 or earlier based on his military service. (His uncle Justus had moved to this town in 1777 and served in the same regiment). On Feb, 7, 1785, John married Hannah Hall in Blandford, MA, according to state vital records. They are listed in the 1790 census. They had four known children before John died in 1793. Hannah remarried and moved W. Bloomfield, NY, then to Concord, NY. See link below to her bio. NOTE: Hannah (Hall) Ashmun is not to be confused with her brother David's wife Hannah (Crowell) Hall, memorial 113843609, who is buried in Blandford, MA. Many family trees confuse these two women.

John and Hannah's children:
- Amaziah Ashmun
- Levi Ashmun
- Sophia Ashmun
- Martha (Ashmun) Brown

Grave says he died "in the 35th year of his age"; a descendant's DAR application gives birthdate which leads to 34y8m8d.

Three nearby graves seem to have been disturbed significantly. See Anna Weld Harger & Dolly M. Smith.
