BALLARD — Clayburne Paynter, age 82, of Ballard, W.Va., passed away, Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. Born March 17, 1927 at Tamcliff, W.Va., he was the son of the late Wirt and Lura Davidson Paynter. Clayburne was a retired coal miner for Kimberling Colliers Coal Company, was a farmer, a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and attended the Victory Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lindside, W.Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruthabelle Simpson; two brothers, Lowell E. and Luther R. Paynter; and two grandsons, Kevin Douglas Paynter and Jeffrey Neal Stevens.

Survivors include his wife, Billie K. Harmon Paynter; three sons, Ivan Paynter and wife Shelby Jean of Lindside, W.Va., Douglas Paynter and wife Letha Ann of Ballard and Edward Russell Paynter and wife Sharon of Ballard, W.Va.; two daughters, Patsy Stevens and husband Larry of Verner, W.Va. and Katrina Justice of Justice, W.Va.; one brother, Charles Paynter and wife Georgia of Baisden, W.Va.; one sister, Gaynelle Stepp of Dayton, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Betty Browning of Gilbert, W.Va; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 12, 2010 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, W.Va., with Pastor J.C. Finley officiating. Burial and a committal service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Dye Cemetery in Verner, W.Va. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the funeral home.
