James Burns, a real pioneer of Rockland, died at his home there this week at the age of 84 years.

James Burns was the last survivor of a family of eight brothers and one sister. He was born in Wicklow County, Ireland in 1837 and lived to the ripe age of 84 years.

In 1857, at the age of 20, he came to this countr and directly to Rockland - just 64 years ago - where he made his home continuously. Mrs. Burns died a few years ago.

Nine children survive as follows: Mrs. Mary Woodbury, Mrs. Anna O'Rourke and Patrick, of Ontonagon; Mrs. Patrick Cosgrove and Mrs. William Huddleston of Rockland; Mrs. T. Corbeil of Houghton; Mrs. Chaskey of Butte, Montana; James Burns of Norway, Wisconsin and Andrew of Hancock. There are 33 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

The late Mr. Burns was treasurer of Rockland Township every two years for the past 36 years.

The funeral was held Friday with burial at Rockland. The pallbearers were six grandsons: G. Lawrence Corbeil, Dell Woodbury, Charles O'Rourke, Francis O'Rourke, Bernard O'Rourke and James O'Rourke.
