Zabelle was born in Sivas, Turkey. She was never in the USSR. She was a survivor along with her mother and siblings of the Hamidian massacre in November, 1895, in Gurin, Turkey. Her father, Dr. Nahabed Y. Abdalian, was killed. He was a US citizen, so the US government helped the family leave for America in 1896.
