LaFay "Lafe" Kirby was born to Edward Kirby and Lucy Louella Packer Kirby on September 22, 1897 in Grace, Bannock County, Idaho. Bannock County was split in 1919 and Grace became a part of Caribou County.

Lafe married Mary Louisa Elwood on June 14, 1922 in Logan, Cache County, Utah. Born to them are Lafe Elwood (Doris Faust), Boyd Calvin (Donna Grover), Donald Edward (Betty Molen), and Donna (Clifford High/Marvin Nelson/Dean Edie). He lived in Grace and Utah's Cache Valley on farms. In 1931, he moved to Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho. He worked for many years as a custodian in LDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) church meeting houses. Lafe retired in 1962 and with Mary, spent the winters in Yuma, Arizona.
