William Garrett's father, George was killed in a farm accident in Holt County, Missouri shortly after he was born. Lou Morton Garrett subsequently took her two young sons, Weedie (b. 1882) and William back "home" to Stanton, Kentucky and lived near her father, Joab Morton. By 1889 she had remarried Alvin Faulkner who became the father-figure that her sons needed. William married Ila Faulkner in 1909 at Stanton and became Sheriff of Powell County by 1920. They had one child, Mildred, who eventually married Clarence Elmont Stephens. Ila died in 1920. William eventually married Nancy "Nannie" Creasy and also ran for Judge in Powell County, although he was defeated.
