"***MATHIAS SCOFIELD arrived in Burr Oak Twp in 1883 and lived on the SW1/4 Sec 2. His sister FRANCES was the mother of GEORGE B. CURTIS an 1886 Kellogg Twp settler.
Perry, youngest son of Mathias, was a dentist in DeSmet for over 30 years. The oldest son JOSHUA BERNETT died at age 18 in the blizzard of '88. He had gone to Wolsey for coal. When the blizzard struck, he unhitched the horses, turned the wagon box over and put his puppy under it. He tried to follow the horses home, but the next morning the horses were found dead and his frozen body lay at a distance. The puppy was unharmed.
The Scofields moved to Idaho in 1902 and to Huron in 1909. The first school in Burr Oak was Scofield School in Sec. 10."
