John was born February 16, 1819 in Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Cramer and Catherine Killinger.

John's first marriage was to Wilamina (Wilhelmina?) Dye on 15 Apr 1841 in Richland County, Ohio. The marriage is documented in the Ohio marriage records. It appears that Wilamina died before 1843, although no formal death record has been found for her, and nothing has been found regarding her burial. [Info from James Craft #48985354]

John married Margaret Carruthers on April 13, 1843 in Franklin, Warren County, Ohio. The 1850 census shows what could be this family in Butler, Miami County, Indiana, with children George and Solomon. About 1852, his family moved to Wisconsin. During the Civil War, John Cramer was the postmaster of the village of Plain, Sauk County, Wisconsin. In the 1870 US census record, John and his wife Margaret are listed with his children (George, Solomon, and Catherine) and his mother (Catherine Killinger Cramer). In the 1880 record, he is listed with his wife, his daughter (Catherine), his son-in-law (Frederick Frideger), and his sister (Susan Cramer Patten).

Two obituaries were in the Weekly Home News (Spring Green, Wisconsin), on November 17, 1892. "Blackhawk news: Died, at his home in Franklin, on Friday last from a stoke of paralysis, John Cramer, aged 73 years. He was one of the first settlers in that town, coming from Pennsylvania. He was buried in the Pleasant Hill cemetery, close by his old home, Rev. A. A. Loomis officiating. He leaves an aged widow, two sons, brothers, sisters and friends to mourn the death of a kind friend and neighbor."

"John Cramer, an old resident of the town of Franklin, died at his home near Plain on the 11th inst., aged 73 years. The funeral occurred on Sunday last, and was very largely attended. Rev. A. A. Loomis, of Spring Green, was present and delivered an impressive funeral sermon. Mr. Cramer was born in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, February 16, 1819."
