Sgt. James McChesney, Jr., was the son of James McChesney, Sr. and Sarah Patterson. He was born between 1754 and about 1774 and died prior to his probate on 27 Apr 1813 in Augusta County, Virginia. I estimated he died in ABOUT 1813.

According to his 1812 will, his grandfather was Patrick Crawford (below).

I strongly SUSPECT he was married second to Charlotte Berry, 1776 - 1816, who is believed buried here. Charlotte "Challe" Berry married a widower, James McChesney on 14 or 16 Nov 1797 in Augusta Co., by Rev. Archibald Scott. It does not make sense to me that she married his father, 43 years her senior, as some believe. Just because a marriage record for this James has not been found (making him a widower) does not mean it did not exist. She is not mentioned in his will and his father did not have one, so it is still very unclear. However a similar sounding slave is mentioned in James (Jr.'s) 1813 will "Negro man Seifico" or similar and Charlotte's 1816 inventory, "To one man Slave Siepo".

James McChesney, died 1813 is listed in the Family Record and Biography by Leander James McCormick (1819-1900), published in 1896, Chicago, p 363. No other data was listed for him, having hoped to locate a wife.

His will was made on 23 Oct 1812. Will Book #11, page 227-228. In the name of God Amen. I James McChesney of Augusta County & State of Virginia being in a low state of health but of sound mind and perfectly composed relying upon the Almighty disposses of all human events do make this my last Will and testament. In the first place Major Charles Berry & Robert McChesney or either of them to sell my plantation and Negro man Seifico(?) left me by the will of my brother Adam McChesney and also the rest of my property and out of the money arising therefrom to pay MY SISTER SALLY Moffett the Legacy coming to her which was left by the will of MY GRANDFATHER PATRICK CRAWFORD to my BROTHER GEORGE and sixty pounds to MY SISTER NANCY or her Heirs forever and sixty pounds to MY SISTER BETSY or her Heirs forever the Balance of the money arising from the sales of the above mentioned property to be equally divided between MY SISTERS MARGARET McChesney and REBECCA McChesney or their Heirs forever. In Witness whereof I do hereby set my hand and seal this twenty thid day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundren and twelve.

"McChesney, James: is buried in the Old Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery located at 1005 Spotswood Rd. in Augusta County. His birth and death dates are not known. In the War of 1812, he served as a Sgt. in McDowell's 5th Virginia Militia Regiment. His service records may be found at the National Archives in roll box 136, record 8643. His burial information may be found in source 165." War of 1812 Veteran Buried in Virginia by the Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Virginia, 10 November 2009 by Myron E. Lyman, Sr., compiler. I note, this has to be the son, James Jr. as his father would have been too old to serve in the War of 1812.

I suspect he would have had an obituary but I've had no luck locating it from the Library of Congress newspapers. I also suspect there may be one in 1813 papers at the Library of Virginia or other Virginia libraries or institutions.
