Mrs. Mary E. Beebe, 90, a former teacher in the schools of this county, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb 11, at a hospital in Jacksonville. She made her home in Carrollton for the past ten years, with a daughter, Mrs. Edna M. Griffin. She was born June 23, 1865 near Hettick, a daughter of John and Emeline Stokes. The family moved to Fayette and Mrs. Beebe attended Greenfield High School for three years then entered the Ladies Atheneum at Jacksonville for her fourth year of high school courses. She taught school at Eldred, West Lincoln and schools near Hillview and Haypress. While teaching in Eldred Community she and A.E. Wilson helped organize the first Sunday school in Eldred, classes being held in Eldred school house. In August of 1893 she married J.F. Beebe of Manchester and they lived on a farm southeast of Manchester until his death in 1906. Mrs. Beebe returned to teaching and had schools in Macoupin county. Her home of 32 years was in Wrights. Surviving besides her daughter, Mrs. Giffin, is a sister Mrs. Lora Wheeler of San Diego, California. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Robert Pitsch, assisted by the Rev. Ollie Phillips, at Hickory Grove Church, Wrights, Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. W.J. Tucker was soloist during the service and her accompanist was Mrs. Carl Scheaffer. Interment was in Hickory Grove Cemetery. The Pallbearers were Charles Smith of Elldred; Leslie Thaxton of Carrollton and Richard Wright, Dan Wright, Everett Prough and Harvey Kesinger of Wrights. The Simpson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Among those attending the services were Mrs. Lester Ridings and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Pogue of Shelbyville, MO. Mrs. Abele Royal of St. Louis: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Robley, Girard; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Finley, Greenfield; Miss. Lena Hayes, Manchester; Miss. Angie Billings, White Hall and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Thurston and Mrs. Granville Wheeler, Gillespie.
