In 1939, George joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served at Manistique, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He was called into the army in 1941, went overseas in 1942, and did not return home until 1945. He ended up ranked a Private First Class.
When George returned home, he had a new wife with him. She was a native of Scotland, and she is still living today so I won't write her name here. They met in Coventry, England, where she was working in a factory making Spitfire planes.
After their return to the US, George worked for commercial carriers until his first heart attack in 1974 when he retired. He traveled frequently and found time to enjoy hobbies such as fishing and betting on the races.
