U.S. VETERAN - Co. C, 26th Reg't., Mich Inf.
From the Muskegon Chronicle- Died -
At the head of Lake Harbor. In the township of Norton, on the 24th Inst., Cornelius Dunn, aged 65yrs. The deceased was one among a few of the oldest settlers of our town, emigrating from Western New York and locating in the neighborhood in which he died, about thirty years ago. He was unmarried, ever living secluded quietly to himself. Yet he possessed many excellent and social qualities, was a man of temperate habits, kind and gentle disposition and highly esteemed by his old neighbors and friends. Stimulated by patriotism and love of country, in the early and dark hours of the Rebellion he manfully went forth in defense of the stars and stripes. He was not a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Yet I am informed that several of the order from the city will attend the funeral, out of respect of their departed comrade. The deceased has been in declining health the past year. His temporal wants have been cared for by his neighbors, J.H. Whitney, Benjamin Brist and others. Some two weeks since he was removed from his comely cabin to the residence of Mr. Brist, where the funeral took place Thursday afternoon. Uncle Cornelius as he was familiarly known, had no relatives or kindred to gather around his lonely couch, as the spirit was about to take its departure, and drop the tear of sympathetic affection and add words of consolation. "Yet kind friends were with him."
