The funeral services for J. L. Smith were held at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon from the late home in the eastern part of the city, in charge of Dr. John W. Ferris, pastor of the Methodist Church.
The services of song was by the male quartet of the Christian Church, composed of J. E. Ground, L. E. Cutler, Frank W. Reynolds and George W. Dawdy. The pallbearers were John H. Marry, George Castle, Tom Castle, G.G. Lenz, D. DeChant, Andrew Hobbs. The flower bearers were Mrs. Charles Lomax, Mrs. Gene LeMatty, Mrs. Rex Jameson and Miss Bessie Atchison.
J.L. Smith, son of James B. and Elizabeth Adeline Smith, was born May 30, 1856, at Swan Creek, Illinois, and died at his home in this city on June 18, 1927, ages 71 years and 19 days.
His childhood was spent at the home of his birth and going with his parents to Oak Grove, Illinois, where he grew to manhood.
He was married to Anna Williamson on October 9, 1887. Being a farmer from choice of occupation he located on a farm near Cadams, Neb., where he saw and helped develop the county's growth and prosperity between the years of 1854 and 1906. He then came to Abingdon, where he has since made his home, living a quiet, industrious life, honored and respected by all who knew him. A most kind and devoted husband and father to the loved one who mourn his going.
Beside his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Olive Phelps and Mrs. Lulu Rayle, there are two grandchildren, five brothers and one sister also mourn his death.
