Services for Bessie Elnora Conwell Strawn of Post were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Post Church of Christ, 10th & Ave. M. Charles McCook will officiate and Travis Sweet and Curtis Baker will assist. Burial followed in the Terrace Cemetery. Arrangements were under the personal care of Dee and Janet Justice, Justice-Mason Funeral Home.

Bessie died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Golden Plains Care Center. She was born Feb. 25, 1925 to Lionel Conwell and Vera Francis (Hiser) Conwell in Caddo, Okla. She was raised in and graduated school from Anson. She attended nursing school at West Texas Hospital in Lubbock. She married J.W. "Jim" Strawn March 6, 1948 in San Angelo. They moved to Abilene and she worked at Hendrick Hospital. She was the first nurse to start the Head Start Program in Abilene, Texas. She moved to Post in January, 1968. She worked for the Garza Memorial Hospital as a labor and delivery nurse. She then went to work as the Post ISD school nurse for 20 years. She retired in May of 1985.

In 1982 she received the Citizen of the Year Award. She was a lifelong member of the Post Church of Christ. Bessie's special interests were her grandkids, quilting and sewing and family vacations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Strawn, June 15, 2009; by her sisters, Pat and Mary; a brother, Gene; and a great-granddaughter, Summer J. Scott.

Survivors include one son, Jay and his wife Susan Strawn of Post; three daughters, Mary Ann and her husband Jack Gordon of Slaton, Nancy and her husband Rick Hoffman of Southlake and Carloyn and her husband Donnie Hair of Post;11 grandchildren, Suzanne and her husband Colt Scott of Lubbock, Larissa and husband Barrett Cable of Lubbock, Jenny Beth Gordon of Andrews, Allison and Lindsay Hoffman of Southlake, Jennifer Strawn of Lubbock, Jay Waylon Strawn of Lubbock, Lyndee and husband Ben Ayala of Burkburnett, Texas, Codie and his wife Sarah Hair of Lubbock, Amanda Hair and Jason and his wife Kenda Hair, all of Post; 18 great-grandchildren, Ryder, Sydney and Jett Scott of Lubbock, Madi, Kyle and Mason Manweiler of Lubbock, Jaylee Keel of Andrews, Jared Wyatt Strawn of Yuma, Ariz., Addison Ayala of Burkburnett, Shelbey, Bailey and Macey Hair of Lubbock, Brooke, Meagan Blair and Abbi Lechuga and Jadon and Landon Hair, all of Post.

Pallbearers were Codie Hair, Jason Hair, Jay Waylon Strawn, Colt Scott, Barrett Cable and Ben Ayala.
