Maria Katharina was born in Ankum, a small German town about 50 miles from the border with the Netherlands. She was the second of six children born to Johann Friederich Von Bokern and his second wife Mary Catharina Wessendorf. In 1871, along with her future husband Johann Friederich Vonderhaar, she immigrated to the US onboard the passenger ship Deutschland which had sailed from Bremen, Germany. After arriving in New York City, they settled in Louisville, KY, where they were married on 04 Feb 1872. The couple had four children: Catherine, an unnamed boy who was stillborn, his twin John F., and Mary Catherine. Friederich died in 1882 and in 1885, she married her second husband, Johann Gerhard Meiners. Katharine died of pneumonia at the age of 69.
