Bernadina was born in the small German town Ankum. She was the second of six children born to Johann Friederich Von Bokern and his second wife Mary Katharina Wessendorf. In 1873 she immigrated to the US on board the passenger ship Deutschland. Along with her sisters Maria Katharina, Sophia, Elizabeth and Mary, she settled in Louisville, Kentucky. She was first married to John M. Klein by whom she had three children: John (1876), Henry (1877) and Frederick (1879). After his passing she married Balthasar Heckel and they had four children: Joseph (1884), Francis (1885), William (1887) and Mary (1895). Bernadina died of pneumonia at the age of 79.
