John was the eldest of the three sons born to John M. Klein and Bernadina Von Bokern. On 09 Sep 1896 he married Bernadina Von Bokern and they had twelve children: John, Elizabeth, Augusta, Marion, Mary, Eleanor, Bernardina, Edward, Norbert, Earl, Lawrence and Dorothy. As a young man John was employed as a teamster before he eventually went to work for the L&N Railroad. Later in life he also worked as a carpenter. John died of senile heart disease at his home, 1019 Chester Avenue, at the age of 85.
