Friederich was born in the small town of Furstenau, Germany. Along with future wife Maria Katharina Von Bokern, he immigrated to the US in 1871 on board the passenger ship Deutschland which had sailed from Bremen, Germany. After arriving in New York City, they settled in Louisville, KY, where they were married on 04 Feb 1872. The couple had four children: Catherine, and unnamed boy who was stillborn, his twin John F., and Mary Catherine. Friederich died of typhoid pneumonia at the age of 43.
