Daughter of the late Dale and Jessie Remy, Irma, the eldest of five children, was born in Albia, Iowa on December 3, 1927. Irma left home at the age of 18 and moved to Chicago where she worked as a secretary while attending night classes at Northwestern University. Irma then moved to California where she met Joseph Emanual, Sr. after he was discharged from the Navy. Irma and Joseph were married April 19, 1947 and then moved to the Washington D.C. area where they resided for over 35 years until retiring to Florida. In 1989 Irma and Joseph moved to Lexington, KY to be closer to family. Irma was actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren, Allison and Dennis, enjoying attending their band concerts and baseball games over the years. More recently she enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, James and Julia, who gave her continued immense joy.
Irma was a long time member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church and also of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Joseph Emanuel; son Joseph Emanuel Jr. (Peggy); granddaughter Allison Emanuel Weitkamp (Charles); grandson Dennis Emanuel (Erica); great-grandchildren James and Julia Weitkamp; brothers Dean Remy (Virginia) and Dale "Brother" Remy; sister Nita Nedderman; brother-in-law Bill Sinclair; and numerous nieces and nephews includng Nick Remy, Toni Lansing, Cheryl Overturf, Becky Nedderman, Kim Sawatzky, Debbie Remy, Billy Sinclair, Brad Sinclair, Vicky Buckingham, and their families. Irma was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Sinclair, brother-in-law, Ed Nedderman, and sister-in-law, Corky Remy.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 7 at Milward-Southland, Lexington, Kentucky with Rev. Bob Justus officiating. Burial followed at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Jessamine County, Kentucky.
