How Dan McDermott Met An Awful Death
Former Anaconda Man Caught in Burning Mine
Is Suffocated and Burned
Caught in the sump of a shaft with a burning shafthouse above, he crawls to the top through the fire and smoke.
The Iowa County Democrat, published at Mineral Point, Wis., reached Anaconda yesterday, containing an account of the death of Daniel McDermott in a mine at Truman. Mr. McDermott was well known in Anaconda, having resided here for some years. At the time of the accident, he had four brothers, one sister, and his mother residents of this city. Mrs. McDermott at once left for Wisconsin upon hearing of the accident and was not made aware of her son's death until she arrived at Truman.

From the newspaper accounts of the accident which caused the death of Daniel McDermott it seems that he and another man were working in the sump of a 50-foot shaft and some giant powder or gasoline, or both, exploded in the shaft house and in a short time the machinery was useless, and the shaft house was on fire. McDermott crawled up the manway, but when he reached the top, his eyes were burned out and he was horribly burned about the face and body. He expired seven hours of intense suffering. His partner was unable to crawl up the ladder and his dead body was found in the bottom of the shaft after the fire had spent its force. The mine at which the accident occurred was a lead producer and was equipped with a gasoline engine. The Democrat gives the following account of the catastrophe.

"At Truman, Lafayette County, on last Thursday morning, occurred a shocking mining accident. Winfield Davis and Daniel McDermott were at work in the bottom of a shaft which they were sinking, when through the explosion of giant powder or gas from gasoline, or both, the plant above them was set on fire. James and Frank McKeon, who were at work in the engine room, made every possible effort to save the entombed men, but without vail. Davis, who was an experienced miner, shouted to them to lower the wire cable, in the hope that they might be raised, but expressed the fear that he and his companion were doomed. The fire, having reached such headway that it was impossible to raise the men by machinery. McDermott climbed the ladders through the flames to the surface but was terribly burned and lived only a few hours. Davis remained below and died from suffocation. The fire consumed the entire plant above the ground and the cribbing for many feet downward.

Daniel McDermott was 32 years of age, and he leaves a wife and children. He lived near the mine and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Truman. Dan was a jolly and kindhearted fellow and was liked by all who knew him. But no more will his jokes or merry laugh be heard. Teh funeral was held Tuesday, Interment was made at the Catholic cemetery, Rev. M. Wren officiating. He is survived by a mother, four brothers, and two sisters, a wife and four children. They have the sympathy of the entire community. A large number of friends attended the funeral.
