Burris Family

Melvin Burris (1878-1936), son of George and Louisa Doan Burris and Mary S. McKillip (1877-1946) daughter of Daniel and Joanna Walsh McKillip were married in Dodgeville in 1904. Prior to her marriage Mary taught school (1903) at Yellowstone with an enrollment of 83 pupils. They settled on a farm in Sec. 34 which Henry C. Hanson later purchased and which is now part of the land owned by Joe Wiegel Jr., purchased from Boise-Cascade Co.

The Burrises had eight children: Elizabeth, Mrs. Lawrence Cavanaugh (See Cavanaugh Family) Guy, and Basil, who died as infants, Elaine, Mrs. John Duval, Dolores, James of Stockton, Ill, Thomas and Mary of Darlington.

Elaine was married to John DuVal, son of John and Elizabeth Jaques DuVal, at Blanchardville in 1930. They have eleven children, including a set of twins. The older children were born in Blanchard and Fayette Townships. The family now resides in California where the younger children were born.

Thomas married Mary Benson, daughter of Roland and Minnie Benson of Darlington in 1944. They bought the George Burgess farm in the Yellowstone River Valley in Sections 27 and 34. Here they raised their family of eight children; Judy, Mrs. Lawrence Christianson of Madison, Helen, Mrs. Mike Hagen of Fayette, Gloria, Mrs. Lawrence Gilbertson of rural Darlington, Karen Beecher of Hollandale, Mary Jo Goebel of Yellowstone Lake area, and Tom, Mark and Theresa at home.

The Tom Burris farm was one of those bought up by Boise Cascade Co. and is now part of Joe Wiegel Jr's land. Tom and Mary now live in Dunbarton, south of Darlington. Mary works at Daktron Industries in Monroe and Thomas is employed by the Lamont Township. One of their daughters has this to say about her childhood.

Some of the memorable times of our farm in Fayette were the hills around us. Whenever we would get mad at Mom or Dad, we would go upon the hill, we called it, and made a house in the opening of a woods. We would take old pots and pans in the woods and make a chair and couch out of of leaves and use sticks for a broom and clear the ground.

Another thing I will always remember is our water fights. The water pump sat about 50 feet away from the milk house. Well we always managed to have at least two against two. The ones in the milk house had a tank full of water where we kept our cans of milk at night to cool and the ones outside had the pump. We each had our buckets and man what fun. This, of course, went on until the tank was empty in the milk house.

We didn't have as much as other kids, but what we had we made do and I am thankful for the way I was raised. So I say thank you Mom and Dad and wish this very day that I lived in those neck-of-the-woods.

Mary Agatha, daughter of the Melvin Burrises lives in Darlington and works at Borg Plant.
