George Spain was born during colonial times, possibly in Wilmington, DE. He married Elizabeth Reynolds in Old Swede's Church (still extant) in Wilmington, DE on November 16, 1793. The records are available at the church. They had three sons: Henry (1794); Edward (1796) and Richard (March 17, 1798). Tragically, in 1798 a yellow fever epidemic swept along the Delaware River from Wilmington to Philadelphia where George made his living as a sailmaker (in business with a man named John Maull). George, his young wife Elizabeth, and their son Henry all died with days of each other, in the later part of the year. Edward and Richard, the baby, survived and were taken care of by Elizabeth's side of the family. Benjamin Reynolds was the executor of George's will. Edward and Richard grew up in Philadelphia and remained close throughout their lives. Richard named his eldest son Edward Livingston Spain, probably in tribute to his elder brother. Where George, Elizabeth and Henry were buried is not known.
