John Shaver, born in Macoupon Co.Ill,
Nov 7, 1842; youngest of 8 children....
4 boys and 4 girls, born to John G.Shaver
and Poll Ann Peters.
Al brothers and sisters have deceased
except David Shaver, now living in
Kirksville.
In the yer 1846 the family moved into
Sangamon Co.Ill. Where they remained
until 1856, when the family moved to
Adair Co. Mo; to a farm 9 miles south
of Kirksville; it being the same farm
on which F. M. Behymer was burned to death
on Dec 1, 1912.
The family always lived on the frontier
and educational advantages were very
meager, yet the subject of this sketch
improved what few advantages he had and
attended the public schools, usually
2 or 2 1/2 miles away, for three or
four months in the winter.
Notwithstanding Mr. Shaver's meager
educational advantages he had considerable
literary talent and published many newspaper
articles and during his long enforced
period of inactivity on account of ill
health and a severe wound he received in the
Army to help him pass the time away, he
wrote some very readable books but never had
them published.
The Shaver family were noted singers and
embraced every opportunity to become
proficient in this art and attended the old
fashioned singing schools where the pitch
was always gotten with a tuning fork.
On the third day of July 1859, Mr Shaver
married Miss Sophronia Flyn, who preceded
him to the Great Beyond Sept. 14, 1888.
