Obituary for Nanno Gerdes -The Osceola Record 13, March 1952

Once more the death messenger has brought us a reminder of our mortality and has given us a warning that we shall not here on earth, find a permanent home.

Nanno Gerdes, son of John and Marie Gerdes, was born on August 2, 1891 at North Dumum, Germany and passed away at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, on March 7, 1952. He was married to Mary Anderson on May 9, 1931 at Lincoln, Nebraska and they have made their home in Osceola since that time with the exception of a year and a half at David City, Nebraska, where he was employed as salesman at the Walling Garage.

Nick, as he was known to his friends, retired from business several years ago because of ill health and has borne his cross cheerfully and uncomplainingly through the years. Nick served with Company D, 349 Infantry in France, during World War I and was discharged on June 11, 1919.

Those left to mourn his departure are his wife, Mary; one brother and two sisters in Germany, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Deceased was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

The funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church in Osceola Sunday afternoon, March 9, 1952 at 2:30, with Rev. Carl Gustafson, pastor, in charge who also conducted the services at the cemetery, followed by the graveside ritual of the Osceola American Legion Post. Pallbearers were Vemer Johansen, Fred Schumann, Albert Timm, Carl Bowman, Melvin Wieseman and Ralph DeLand.

Those attending from outside Polk County were: Hugo Leo, Ray Lilledol, Bruning, Nebraska, Mrs. Mable Anderson, Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Anderson and family, Miss Mary Jean Anderson and Donald Anderson of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson, Nebraska City and Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Hunter of Wahoo.
