Riley Crippen died on Wednesday night Feb. 28th at his residence just south of the village. Mr. Crippen was one of the old landmarks of the town, and had long lived among us as an upright, industrious citizen, and highly esteemed. His age was 72 years. He leaves a circle of relatives in this town and in the western state to mourn his loss. Funeral services will be held today from the Baptist Church at 2pm.

Mr. Riley Crippen was born March 19, 1805, in Herkimer County, NY, on the lands known as the Royal Grants, and died March 1st, 1877, being 18 days less than 72 years old. He moved to Naples in 1810, and has lived in this town all the time since except about two years during which he lived in the town of Hopewell in this county. On Feb. 1st, 1827 he was married to an estimable lady of Hopewell, who still survives him to mourn his loss, after a little more than fifty years of married life. As a neighbor and citizen he was a man of few words, following the rule of thinking before speaking. His life has been that of honesty and industry - known better at home and among his friends than by the world. In early part of the winter he realized that disease was bringing him near to another world, and he was enabled to rest his hope in Christ; as death approached, he passed away with the assurance that his rock was not as the rock of those who trust in this world. Thus death is taking one by one of our aged and estimated citizens from among us. The funeral was very largely attended last Saturday from the Baptist Church, and his remains rest in Rose Ridge Cemetery.
