Nancy was born in 1823 in Wilkinson, County, Georgia and moved with her parents, James Harrison and Delany Justice to Butler County, Alabama. Her parents are buried in the Harrison Cemetery in Butler County, near Greenville. Nancy married John Reddin Alford/Halford around 1842 in Alabama. The family was listed on the 1850 Rocky Mount District, Lowndes County, Alabama Federal Census as Redding Hallford (instead of Alford) and he was listed as a school teacher.
Not much is known about John ‘Reddin' and Nancy's everyday life. What we do know is tidbits of information handed down from various family members in and around Milam County, Texas and although these ‘tidbits' from this one or that one is ‘the same with a twist', none of it has been proven. Tradition has it that Nancy went to Florida during the Civil War to visit or bring home her wounded son. She went by train and took her 2 year old child. The child died on the way and the conductor had to stop the train to bury the child. Her wounded son died later as a young man and is buried in the Forest Grove Cemetery in Milam County. (Information from Tom Underwood, Rockdale, Texas)
(Although this story has been told by various family members in various parts of the country, I have found nothing to substantiate this information.)Nancy was described as a rather stern woman and a very hard worker.
