Daniel Mullen was born to Ebenezer B. Mullen, Sr. and Mary Ellen Brundige on April 15, 1837, in Upper Canada near Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His brothers are Isaac, Nathaniel, Ebenezer B., Jr., and Levi. His father died in 1838 and his mother married William R. Thompson. Daniel moved with his family to Lee County and Ogle County, Illinois in the mid-1850's.

Daniel married Lucinda Jane Youker on November 8, 1866, in Rockford, Winnebago, Ilinois. He moved with his family to Iowa in the Fall of 1875 to a farm near Villisca, Montgomery County. Born to Daniel and Lucinda are Miles Gilbert, Lauren (Lou or Lon) Elmer, Nellie (Mary Ellen), Celestial (Lessie) Mae, Millie (Mildred L, and Elizabeth Viola.
