Henry Gonet, 80, of Chicopee, died Thursday, August 26, 2004 at home. Born in Chicopee on November 21, 1923, he was a lifelong Chicopee resident.
He was the son of the late Jacob and Zophia (Polchlopek) Gonet.
Henry attended Chicopee High School and played on the school's baseball & basketball teams. He later played semi-pro baseball for the Chicopee Rifles. He coached baseball for many years for the Chicopee Boys Club teams. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of War, and fought in the battle of Luzon. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, the Phillippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Service Star, and the Victory Medal. Henry worked for 39 years for Spalding Sports Worldwide, retiring in 1983 as supervisor of the golf ball department. He was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, and a member of the Chicopee Elks, Lodge 1849.
Henry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sophie A. (Laszczyk) Gonet, 3 daughters, Christine F. Duval and her husband Paul of Chicopee, Joanne M. Powers and her husband James of Chicopee, and Susanne S. Curtis and her husband Paul of Wilbraham; and 6 grandchildren, Matthew G. Duval, Sarah A. Powers, Meredith M. Duval, Bradford E. Curtis, Kyle J. Powers, and Nathan J. Powers.
