Hiram Liechty, 81, dies this morning

Hiram Liechty, 81, a retired Berne businessman, died at 8:15 a.m. this morning at the Swiss Village Nursing Home after suffering a fatal heart attack.

MR. Liechty was associated with the Liechty Brothers Plumbing and Heating firm until his retirement 12 years ago.

He was a member of the Cross United Church of Christ.

Mr. Liechty was born Oct. 28, 1889, in French Township and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Liechty. He was married to Fanny Beitler on May 12, 1919.

Surviving is his wife; one son, Frederick of Berne; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Jane) Bentz of Route 1, Berne; Mrs. John (Laura) Fisher of Scotch Plains, N.J.; three brothers, Elmer, Oswald and Clifton, all of Berne; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Yager Funeral Home with Rev. Robert L. Hegnauer and Rev. Wilson Bixler officiating. Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery. Friends may call at the Yager Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Thursday.

Hiram Liechty Dies Today at Swiss Village

Funeral Friday for Former Local Businessman, 81

Hiram Liechty, 81, long a prominent businessman in Berne, died at 8:15 am today in the Nursing Care Unit of Swiss Village where he had been a resident for several years.
Mr. Liechty had been in ill health for 13 years following a stroke. Death this morning was caused by a heart attack. He had been critically ill several days.
Mr. Liechty was in the heating and plumbing business here for many years, managing and being part owner of the Liechty Brothers Plumbing until his retirement in 1969 because of ill health.
A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Liechty was born October 28, 1889 in French Township, a son of Jacob and Regina Liechty. He was married May 2, 1919 to Fannie Beitler, who survives and resides at Swiss Village.
Also surviving are a son, Frederick H. Liechty, who is associated with the First Bank of Berne; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Jane) Bentz, R.R. 1, Berne and Mrs. John (Laura) Fisher, Scotch Plains, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and three brothers, Elmer, Oswald and Clifton Liechty, all of Berne.
Mr. Liechty was a member of the Cross United Church of Christ, where he was active, holding various position until stricken with ill health.
The body is at the Yager Funeral Home where friends may call after 4 pm Thursday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 am Friday, Rev. Robert Hegnauer and Rev. Wilson Bixler officiating. Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery.
