Noah Luginbill, 90, prominent Berne man and a lifelong resident of this community, died at 10:03 pm Tuesday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur, where he had been a patient the past four weeks. Death followed an illness of six weeks and is blamed to complications and infirmities. His condition had been serious the past two weeks.
A retired businessman, Mr. Luginbill was widely known. He is a former local banker and was associated with the former Sprunger, Lehman and Company for 60 years. He served as cashier of the former People’s State Bank for a number of years and later as secretary of the Berne Furniture Company when it was organized. He was associated with Sprunger, Lehman and Company from June 1, 1899 to June 1, 1959. He was secretary of the firm for many years and later became president of the business. He clerked in the store for a long period where his warm and friendly smile endeared him to many.
Mr. Luginbill was a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church and served as church auditor for several years. He was active in many community, civic and church events and was a former member and officer of the Berne Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the organization which built the Berne Auditorium many years ago.
A native of Monroe Township, Mr. Luginbill was born January 19, 1879, a son of Jeremiah and Barbara Lehman Luginbill. He was married to Ida E. Soldner on November 3, 1901, in Berne, with the Rev. Sam Sprunger officiating. His wife preceded him in death in 1958 and the last few years Mr. Luginbill resided with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Habegger at 913 West Main Street.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn V. Habegger, wife of Rev. Tillman Habegger of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Milo (Inez A.) Habegger, Berne; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Lewis (Susan) Habegger, Berne. Three brothers, Clinton, Elmer and Wilbur Luginbill and three sisters, Mrs. William Lehman, Mrs. Levi Wulliman and Mrs. Otto Neuenschwander preceded him in death.
The body is at the Yager Funeral Home where friends may call after 2 pm Thursday. Services will be held at 10 am Friday in the chapel of the First Mennonite Church, Rev. Gordon J. Neuenschwander and Rev. Gerald Stucky officiating. Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery.
