He was born to Samuel Brees (1 Apr 1801-5 Apr 1868) and Elizabeth Crist (1812-1884).

He enlisted with Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry on 1 Aug 1863 from his home in Iconium, Appanoose County, Iowa, and was discharged on 13 Aug 1865 at Macon, GA.

His widow filed for a pension (#383468) and a minor's pension on 25 Nov 1887.
