Sarah Jane Mason was the second daughter (third child) of Captain Lawrence Sprague Mason and Sarah French. She was born 6 August 1832, in Potsdam, NY, and married Harry Brownson, Jr, son of Harry Brownson and Eliza Coleman, on 6 April 1851, in Richmond, Vermont. During the Civil War, Harry served as a Quartermaster officer, rising to the rank
of Lieutenant Colonel. They had five children: Katie, Harry III, Mary, Lillie, and Daisy.
After the Civil War, Harry took a job as the station Agent for the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska, and later, became the station master for the Wells Fargo Company, also in Omaha, Nebraska. He died in Omaha, Nebraska, on 7 February 1891, and is buried there. After her husband's death, Sarah Jane Brownson met and married Clement A. Lounsberry, in 1893, in Bismarck, North Daktoa, where he ran a newspaper, the Bismarck Tribune. When he sold the newspaper, they moved to Washington DC, where he worked as a clerk in one of the government bureaus. She stayed with him until her death on 19 January 1919, in Washington, DC. She is buried next to Clement in Arlington National Cemetery.
