Harry Brownson Jr, was born in Richmond, Vermont, the second son of Harry Brownson Sr (1794-1829), and Eliza Coleman Brownson (1805-unknown). He enlisted as a Lieutenant 1st Class on Sept. 19, 1862. He was promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on Sept. 19, 1862 (1st Lieut. and Quartermaster). He received a Commission in Company S, 12th Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment on Sept. 26, 1862, and was mustered out of Company S, 12th Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment on July 14, 1863 in Brattleboro, VT. He was promoted to Captain on Feb. 29, 1864 (Captain and Asst. Quartermaster). He was commissioned in Quartermaster's Dept. Regiment VO on Feb. 29, 1864, and promoted to Major on May 25, 1865. He mustered out of the Quartermaster's Dept. Regiment VO on Oct. 30, 1865. For meritorous service during the war, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, in 1867.

He married Sarah Jane Mason on 6 April 1851, in Richmond, Vermont. They had five children: Katie, Harry III, Mary, Lillie, and Daisy. After the Civil War, Harry took a job as the station Agent for the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska, and later, became the station master for the Wells Fargo Stage Company, also in Omaha, Nebraska. He died in Omaha, Nebraska, on 7 September 1891, and is buried there. After her husband's death, Sarah Jane Brownson met and married Clement A. Lounsberry, in 1893.
