Services held for J. W. Conger, veteran attorney

James William Conger, who had practiced law in Carroll and Montgomery counties for over 50 years, died last Thursday at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona. He was 82.

"Judge" Conger, as he was affectionately known to all, had been a practicing attorney in Winona since moving here in the early 1920's from Vaiden.

A native of the Blackmonton community near Vaiden, Mr. Conger attended Mississippi State University and obtained his liberal arts degree there. He taught briefly before going on to the University of Mississippi, where he received his law degree.

Following his graduation, he returned to Vaiden to establish his practice, and served for a time as county attorney there.

He was married to the former Alberta Grantham, also of Vaiden, who taught English at Winona High School for many years. She preceded him in death several years ago.

One of the early members of the Mississippi Bar Association, Mr. Conger was one of its active supporters, and maintained his membership until the time of his death. He was greatly interested in the alumni organizations of both Mississippi State and Ole Miss and a supporter of both schools. Long a sports fan, he attended their football games whenever possible, as well as those of Winona High School.

He was a member of Moore Memorial Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Mr. Conger were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24 Moore Memorial Methodist Church, Rev. J. Leo Bailey officiating. Burial was in the Vaiden cemetery, Lee Funeral Home in charge.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jack L. Kalow, Smyrna, Tennessee; four sisters, Mrs. G. W. Wofford, Drew; Mrs. Narhan Kelly, Bossier, Louisiana; Mrs. C. C. Nix, Birmingham, Alabama; Mrs. L. C. Hodges, Sidon; and two grandchildren.

His nephews served as pallbearers.
