She married James Henry Averyt who migrated to Cooke County, Texas and later settled in Wynnewood (then in the Chickasaw Nation but today Oklahoma) where he practiced medicine.
After her husband's death, Ellen (Lockhart) Averyt lived with the family of her daughter and namesake, Ellen (Averyt) Smith (wife of Thomas J. Smith, Jr.), near the Red River in Cooke County. She lived there her remaining days and died 2 Nov. 1898.
Note from family:
Ellen (Lockhart) Averyt's husband, Dr. James Henry Averyt is buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. There is a street named after him in that town as he was very well known in the area. James Henry Averyt's Find a Grave number is #41615622. In a copy from the old Averyt family Bible his name and the name of his family members were entered as "Avery" but a "T" was added to the end of the name two generations earlier but written "Avery" in the Bible. One of Thomas J. Smith's grandsons was named after Dr. James Henry Averyt - J.H. Averyt Smith of Tyler, Texas "Uncle Averyt" - son of James Madison "Jim" Smith & Ella Mae (Able) Smith of Cooke County, Texas. Averyt Smith was the brother of my grandmother, Effie Mina (Smith) Shotwell Morris.
