Royal Navy Officer, Lord of the Admirality and a member of Parliament.He was regarded as one of the greatest seamen of his age.He was knighted for his exploits by Queen Ann on 9 September 1704,promtoted to Rear Admiral in 1705,Vice Admiral in 1708 and Admiral in 1709.He entered parliament in 1705 and was regarded as a useful member of the House of Commons, representing Portsmouth,Rochester and Queenborough all with strong navel connections.He was a Lord of the Admiralty from 1704 until deafness forced him to resign in 1727.
