Francis Marion Lewis married Eliza Ellen Monroe in 1858 in Jennings Twp, Jennings County, Indiana. Eliza is the daughter of William and Mary C. Monroe. To this union were born 9 children: Alice Jane Lewis 1858-1927, William Fletcher Lewis 1862-1897, Cicero Ellsworth Lewis 1867-1943, Oliver Grant Lewis 1868-1939, Daniel 1872- , James M Lewis 1874-1875, Uzetta May Lewis 1876-1877, Harry Lewis 1879- and Bertha Lewis 1881-1882.

Eliza Ellen Monroe Lewis died in 1882. In 1889, Francis Marion Lewis married Margarette Elizabeth Spencer. Of this union was born one daughter, Ethel May Lewis 1889-1986.

In the early 1840s, Daniel David Lewis, father of Francis, built the house pictured to the right. It is said to have had a birthing room with a copper floor. My great Uncle Herschel Wayne Lewis, to this day, tells the story that each room in the house had it own flue for heat - quite a luxury in those days! And that Daniel David had 2 full time men who did nothing but chop wood and keep the house supplied in the winter. He also speaks of the Lewis family and their connection to the underground railroad and how Daniel David had a secret room in the house to hide the slaves. Francis Marion spent most of his childhood years in this home. This home is located and still stands on the same road as the Keith Family Cemetery in Jennings County, Indiana.

Francis Marion Lewis is my gg grandfather.
