Paul J. Abel was a retired vice president of engineering for the Yoder Co.
Mr. Abel, 87, of Parma, died of cancer Thursday at Fairview General Hospital.
He was born in Cincinnati and reared in Anderson, Ind. He attended Notre Dame University, where his gym instructor was legendary football coach Knute Rockne.
Mr. Abel moved here after college and worked for the old New York Central Railroad, then joined Yoder in the 1930s. He was involved in the production of munitions at Yoder during World War II.
He was a serious amateur photographer who took courses in the subject at Western Reserve University.
He was a lay minister at St. John Bosco Catholic Church and assisted services there.
Mr. Abel's wife, Beatrice, died in 1974. He is survived by sons, Thomas of Brecksville and Ronald of Parma; a stepson, Robert Harrigan of Cleveland; a daughter, Patricia Powers of Strongsville; 12 grandchildren. Another stepson, James, died in 1971.
Son of the late Joseph and Mary (nee Bauer), brother of Ted, Magdalene, Rosemary and Eleanor, and the late Gene and Madonna.
Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 6480 Pearl Rd., Parma Heights.
