Frank C. Hetzel was the oldest son of John P. and Sarah Howell Hetzel. He was born in a log cabin near Princeton. He remembered when the road to Ottawa was covered with dust 5 inches deep. "A string of wagons would kick up so much dust you could hardly get your breath." Frank was still a toddler when the grasshoppers came from the west and ruined crops. "My folks took me outside, and when I looked up, I saw just a black cloud in the sky." He remembered the Centennial celebration in Ottawa, July 4, 1876, ". . . people and horses filled the dirt and cobblestone streets. Every time a rocket went off, the horses jumped!" Frank Hetzel lived for nearly a century and saw constant change.
