John P. Hetzel was the son of Jacob L. and Susan Smith Hetzel. He served for 3 years during the Civil War in Pennsylvania Co. B., 32nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in action with a "minnie" ball in June of 1862 and listed as missing from his unit for several months. Kansas State census reports also show that he was a P.O.W. at Libby Prison. He was exchanged or paroled, as he eventually returned to his unit and completed his service.

He came to Kansas, purchased farm land in Franklin County, married, and raised seven children. John Hetzel is recorded with his wife, Sarah, and family, in every Franklin County, Kansas, state and federal census from 1870 to 1915.
