George Smith, a.k.a. Georg Schmitt was born in northern Young Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania to Jakob Schmitt (1810-1877) and wife Katharina Baas (1803-1895), immigrants from the Rheinpfalz. His obituary noted that at the time of his death, his surviving siblings were Adam J. Smith and Philip Smith.

George was a lumberman, brewer, and farmer for the majority of his life and resided in northern Young Township, initially near the farm where he was born and later near what became Harmony. He was first married to Maria Schmitt (a.k.a. Mary Smith) of Canoe Township, Indiana County, around 1866; this marriage ended in divorce around 1871.

Their children were:

- Catherine Louisa Smith, wife of Daniel Zimmerman
- Theophilus Smith
- Philip T. Smith, husband of Margaret Caroline McGee of Battle Hollow, daughter of James McGee and Susannah Newcom

He remarried about 1872 to Wilhelm Elisabeth Schmitt (a.k.a. Wilhelmina Smith), sister of his 1st wife. George and Wilhelmina had a further 13 children:

- George W. Smith, a coal miner
- Annie Smith (died in infancy)
- Edward Cecil Smith
- Emanuel Martin Smith
- Thomas Smith
- Nelson Oliver Smith
- Lyman L. Smith (twin)
- Aaron Smith (twin), stonemason
- William Smith, truck driver
- Samuel, died in an railroading accident
- Wilhemina Etta Smith, wife of Joseph Bouchey (Bushey)
- Eva "Effie" May Smith [Dewitt, Wright],
- Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smith, wife of Charles Lindy and Andrew Kirkpatrick .
