Samuel J. Smith was the youngest son of Jakob Schmitt and Katharina Baas, who settled in northern Young Township near Battle Hollow, north of Walston. He was the twin brother of Mary Ann Smith Ackerman.
He was first married to Mary Ellen Trusell (daughter of William Bigler Trusell and wife Susannah Redding) in 1872. Samuel and wife Mary were the parents of three children: Anna C. Smith (wife of William M. Haire and later Calvin R. Clontz/Glontz); Harry George Smith, and Arminta Mary Smith (wife of Michael Carrozelli).
After the death of his wife Mary in 1906, Samuel remarried to Martha Jane Kesslar, widow of Isaiah Williams of Bell Township, who died in 1902.
In the early morning of 28 June 1912, at the age of 61, Samuel died from liver disease at his home near Elk Run. He was survived by his second wife, all three of his children, and four of his older brothers (Philip, William J., George, and Adam J.). His funeral was held on June 30 at St. Peter's German Reformed Church, officiated by Rev. Uriah O. H. Kerschner. He was thereafter interred next to his first wife in Circle Hill Cemetery.
At the time of his death, Samuel was employed as a laborer for the Jefferson Traction company, although in the past he had worked as a farmer, miner, and day-laborer.
