Brief report on 5th Machine Gun Battalion in Chateau Thierry Sector
May 31—July 8, 1918.

Battalion entrained on morning of May 31st at Chars and arrived at Nanteuil-le-Haudouin about 1:00 A.M. June 1st. Was detrained at once and marched to Montreuil-aux-Lions. About 1:00 A.M. June 2nd, the battalion was ordered to join the 23rd Infantry. One company was assigned to each battalion of the 23rd Infantry and one company to a battalion of Marines attached to the 23rd Infantry. The Machine Guns advanced with the infantry and took up positions north of Marigny-en-Orzois, Germigny-sous-Coulombs and Coulombs.

One company was held as reserve at Coulombs with a battalion of infantry. During the day and night the French cavalry and infantry retired thru these positions.

On the 3rd & 4th the machine guns withdrew from this sector when the infantry was relieved by the Marines.

Company C with the 23rd Infantry and Company D with the 9th Infantry took up positions West and East of La Thiolet respectively Company C advanced two platoons with the infantry in the attack on June 6th and suffered a number of casualties.

Company B relieved Company C about 12th June 18. About June 9th, Company A went into Bouresches with the 23rd Infantry and relieved the machine guns of the Marines.

Company D with the 9th Infantry held the positions East of Thiolet until the Division was relieved.

In the attack on VAUX, July, Company A fired barrage from a position in the edge of the woods southwest of the town. About 40,000 rounds were fired during the attack and against a counter—attack by the enemy. Company C relieved Company A and continued to hold this commanding position with one platoon until the Division was relieved. One platoon was held on Hill 201 during the whole period in this sector.
