1901 Census Son of Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Creaser of 71 Bridge St, age 8, born Gainsborough.
Marshalls Turner. Aged 23, On board the transport ship SS Mercian in Mediterranean. Ship shelled by submarine. One of 8 members of Lincs. Yeomanry missing. See G.N. 24.09.15. See G.N. 12.11.15. The "Mercian Incident". The Yeomanry embarked on the HMT Mercian on 17th Oct. 1915. Their destination was known to few. Arrived at Gibraltar. After the ship left Gibraltar explosive shells began to fall on the ship. Attacked by a German submarine. Attack lasted an hour and a half. 100 men and horses killed. Ship did not sink and managed to limp to Oran in French North Africa. The ship underwent repairs before heading to Alexandria. GN 19.11.15 Letter about shelling 12.11.15 and 24.12.15.
