Moses Jasper Nichols enlisted at Camp Trousdale, TN on June 9, 1861. He was a private in Co. F, 16th TN Regiment under Captian H.H. Dillard in the Civil War. Jasper was wounded in the Battle of Perryville, KY on Oct 8, 1862. He was shot in both legs and his left arm; his arm was amputed. In 1863 he was promoted to 3rd lieutenant.

After the war, Jasper taught school at Penfield, GA. While there he was convicted of "sin" and locked up in his room for three days and three nights without food or water.

After returning home to TN, he became the Methodist minister in one of the oldest Methodist congrations in the upper Cumberland section at Pleasant Grove.
