Richard or "Dickie" as his sister Alice called him, was only 9 years old when his mother died tragically. His father had abandoned the family by the 1930 census when he was 7 and living at 29 Ames Court, Akron, OH, so his mother's passing in 1932 left him and his siblings as orphans. Dickie was sent to Parmadale Children's Village of St. Vincent de Paul in Parma, Ohio, outside Cleveland, which focused on boys ages 6 to 16 years. In the 1940 census he is listed as living with his sister Dot who was then 27, married with a husband and three children at 1460 White Ave. Akron.
