Edwin Akers, born in 1925 in Ohio, the son of Edwin D. and Laura E. Akers, enlisted in the United States Army "for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law" at Columbus, Ohio on December 4, 1943. He had completed four years of high school and was single, without dependents.

Assigned to the 106th Reconnaissance Troop, 106th Infantry Division, Private Akers, service number 35296661, was killed in action on April 7, 1945. He was buried at Plot B Row 21 Grave 1 at the Ardennes American Cemetery at Neupré (Neuville-en-Condroz), near Liège, Belgium, having been awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
