Names of Harrison Davis' parents are unknown, as is his place of birth. He consistently gave North Carolina as his state of birth, and some evidence points to origins in the vacinity of Sandy Mush. Harrison was father to 12 children: six children with first wife Elizabeth, some born in NC and some in GA; and six with second wife Jane, all born in NC. Harrison, Elizabeth, and their family lived along Sandy Mush Creek in Buncombe County NC, in Murray County GA, and in Lafayette County MS. Apparently, Elizabeth died about 1860, and Harrison promptly returned to Sandy Mush. He married Jane Noland of Fines Creek, Haywood County NC, and they settled along Sandy Mush Creek and raised six children.

Harrison Davis appears as a man of wide interests and considerable ability. He worked as a farmer, merchant, government official, prize fighter, and pastor. He often traveled from Buncombe County to distant cities like Atlanta GA to box in the ring, and he was instrumental in founding the church now known as Piney Grove Baptist Church in Madison County not far from Sandy Mush Creek. Baptist records show that he was ordained as minister in 1878.
