Emily was born with a congenital heart defect (Tetrology of Fallot), diagnosed at three weeks of life. She had heart surgery a short while later and suffered serious complications during this surgery. She ended up being in the hospital for five months due to the complications and ended up being in four different hospitals for 11 of her short 17 months of life.
